In the realm of Olympic hopefuls, Dylan Beard is a true outlier. While many athletes are fully dedicated to their training, Beard is carving out his path with a unique blend of athleticism and determination, all while working full-time at the deli counter of a local Walmart.

Beard’s journey to the spotlight began unexpectedly when he emerged victorious in the 60-meter hurdles at the prestigious Millrose Games in February. Reflecting on his win in an interview with TODAY, Beard shared his mindset, describing himself as going into the competition with a relaxed attitude, seeing it as an opportunity to gain rather than to lose.

His impressive performance not only secured him the title of the third fastest hurdler globally but also earned him a coveted spot at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials in Eugene, Oregon, slated for June. Despite this newfound recognition, Beard wasted no time returning to his usual routine, seamlessly transitioning back to weight training, practice sessions, and his shifts at Walmart’s deli counter.

What sets Beard apart is not just his athletic prowess but his remarkable work ethic and unwavering dedication. Despite being an unsponsored athlete, he continues to pursue his Olympic dreams while juggling the demands of a full-time job. Training at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, Beard embodies resilience and perseverance, qualities that haven’t gone unnoticed by his coach, Reuben McCoy, who speaks highly of both his work ethic and character.

At Walmart, Beard’s commitment to excellence is equally evident. David Davis, his manager, praises his exceptional customer service and describes Beard as someone who consistently goes above and beyond, mirroring his dedication on the track.

But Beard’s aspirations extend beyond the Olympic arena. Despite his athletic pursuits, he managed to earn a master’s degree in public health from Howard University. He hopes to utilize his education to make a difference in his community, particularly by counseling at-risk youth.

For Beard, every endeavor, whether it’s hurdling towards Olympic glory or serving customers at Walmart, is a reflection of his character and values. He understands the significance of his actions and embraces the responsibility that comes with representing both himself and others.

In a heartwarming gesture of support, Walmart surprised Beard with a $20,000 check to assist him on his journey to the Olympic trials. Overwhelmed by the unexpected gesture, Beard expressed gratitude for the opportunity and the unwavering support from his loved ones and community.

As he continues to chase his dreams, Dylan Beard serves as a beacon of inspiration, proving that with grit, determination, and a generous serving of heart, anything is possible.
