This week, the school’s football players turned a Miami-Dade school board meeting into a stage for advocacy. Their message was loud and clear: bring back Coach Teddy. And this isn’t just any coach. Teddy Bridgewater, a former NFL quarterback and hometown legend, returned to his old high school to volunteer his time and experience. After a sudden suspension tied to coaching rules, he’s been benched. His players are not taking it quietly.
“Football saved my life,” one student told the board. “Coach Bridgewater isn’t just teaching plays. He’s teaching us how to be better people.”
Why Was Teddy Benched?
Bridgewater’s suspension stems from a Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) investigation into what are called “impermissible benefits.” Though his actions were generous and came from a place of care, they violated specific rules.
Here’s what happened: Teddy Bridgewater used his own money to support the team in ways the FHSAA doesn’t allow. He spent thousands each week on Uber rides to get players to practice, pregame meals, recovery services like therapy and massage, and even maintenance for the field. He also paid for team apparel and a preseason camp. In total, these expenses added up quickly—and while they came from a place of love and leadership, they crossed a line in the FHSAA rulebook.
Under Rule 38.1.1, any financial help to players has to go through the school or an approved booster program. Bridgewater openly posted about his contributions and even asked for donations online, which brought public attention to the issue. Despite good intentions, the FHSAA flagged the situation, and he was suspended.
The Bigger Picture
